Barely recommended. Not worth full price. Buy it on discount. 6/10, lazy, fun, a decent shooter if taken with a large grain of salt. hiber bet feels like a beta, even with the DLC. Hopefully Boltgun 2 fixes the many creativity and design flaws, and does something about the absurd projectile spam and the useless melee. Having beaten the game and the DLC on the highest difficulty, a few things really stand out: 0. Balance. This game has very poor balance in both weapons and enemies, keep that in mind for everything below. It's a projectile-spam game, just like Space Marine 2, and it makes no effort to hide it, since constant forced movement is the only solution for survival. 1. It feels like a beta. There's no refinement anywhere. Enemies crowd you, prefire, and both melee and ranged combat just feel boring. Enemy AI and spawning are random as hell, which means the devs can't actually know what the difficulty curve looks like at higher levels, only a rough range of possible enemy combinations and when they might show up. I very much doubt the devs or their managers ever cleared the higher difficulties, if they played them at all, and for sure did multiple runs of the boss fights. Especially the final of the DLC is some of the worst looping of the same boring elements. 2. Weapon balance is atrocious. Melee is a joke on Exterminatus. It has no proper use case anywhere in the game. The power-ups that show up are great, but most of the time very badly timed, you can't even carry them with you. Worse, they're hidden in nooks and crannies you have no time to search, usually only findable after a fight is over, which left me wondering why the devs bothered implementing them this way at all. 3. Instant spawns and aimbot prefire. Every enemy teleports into place and immediately prefires with perfect aim. Some bosses and elite enemies will spawn in behind you for no reason, even if you checked that spot a second ago. 4. No creativity in map or enemy design. The difficulty spike always follows the same recipe: tiny linear corridor or arena, boss AoE plus explosive and projectile spam aimed at you, then charging melee enemies that can't be blocked, staggered, or parried. Your own weapons deal AoE damage to you, and every grenade self-damages. Then the game just keeps spawning enemies into that same space, ad infinitum. You can't backtrack between areas and you're forced forward, and enemies physically block you, sometimes as flat 2D sprites you can barely see. Taunting the enemies should be more accesible, rather than swapping out your weapons for it. It's a shame that most of main character interactivity, Malum Caedo, is locked behind the T keybind, rather than speaking during the mission itself, another missed opportunity. Malum and enemies should interact more, and the voice lines for enemy astartas / chaos should be more fleshed out rather than silly screeches all the time. 5. Tunnel vision in level design. It shows in every map. Very lackluster. Only the warp levels have decent design. The DLC is noticeably different here and does a better job. 6. Weapon and enemy switching is the core loop, and it's badly implemented. There's no Doom-style scroll wheel. Just number keys or mouse wheel up/down, which makes reaching slots 6 through 0 a pain in the arse on keyboard and mouse. There's no enemy info during gameplay either; it's buried in Escape > Help. And did I mention the random spawns in front of and behind you? All in all just a bad PC experience. 7. Performance is meh, even with my specs, this game has moments where it should run FAR more fluenty than it did, maybe it due to the guns and the massive enemy projectile spam that occurs.
